Factors Influencing Serum Creatinine Readings

Creatinine is a normal byproduct of muscle breakdown (creatine phosphate metabolism). Certain non-renal factors can artificially raise or lower serum creatinine levels:

  • High Muscle Mass: Bodybuilders and athletes naturally produce more creatinine, which may yield an artificially low eGFR score despite healthy kidneys.
